JUG Index gathering

Overview:

I'm creating a Confluence driven site to capture and list all of the active and 'no longer active' Java User Group listings. The reasons are:
1) These sites are notoriously out of date and
2) This will provide a bit of information about Confluence to Java developers, but references will be very minimal and I don't plan on any standard advertising.

The reason behind this effort is primarily that these listings have always been spread out in several places, nearly always out of date, difficult to search, difficult or impossible to update, etc.

I want to add value to the Java community by offering stewardship of this listing. There still might be other listings but this will always be up to date.

Task 1:

Collect all JUG (Java User Group) links and blurbs from the following links: http://community.java.net/jugs/listing_country.csp http://community.java.net/jugs/listing.csp http://www.cafeaulait.org/usergroups.html https://jugs.dev.java.net/ http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/JUGs https://jugs-incubator.dev.java.net/ http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/JUGs/SunTop50JUGProgram

Also any other sites listing JUGs I overlooked would be great.

Perhaps you might just want to put these all into a large file, getting them into some uniform format where the fields are:
Name, description, country / state / city

Probably an Excel or some other spreadsheet system so you can sort as mentioned below.

Task 2:

Eliminate redundant entries. Sorting by name in a spreadsheet will probably help.

Task 3:

Test the links. If they are active put them into an active file. If the links are broken, or do not respond but them into a file titled defunt.

Task 4:

Add all of the active links in a table here: http://www.jugindex.org/display/jug/Home

(please use the existing table format)

JUG Name (with link) Description Country, State, City

The country, state, city will let us sort the list by location when we later offer the data as a sortable table.

Add all the defunct links to the defunct page: http://www.jugindex.org/display/jug/Defunct+JUG+links (with the same table format)

log in using:
login: jugindexer
password: jugindexer1

The fastest way to probably do this is export the Excel file as CSV and then use a text editor to search and replace all of the commas ',' to pipes '|'

Suggestions

Go through the process of adding just a couple of individual listings before doing anything else. This will probably expedite the whole process as you'll know what to expect.

Other comments:

  • Anyone who can operate a web browser, an excel spreadsheet, do a simple sort in the spreadsheet, and a quick search and replace within an editor can probably handle this project.
